So in preparation of the winter and our loathesome state, we are making changes. Much like me and my winter-me/non-winter-me syndrome. :)
First off, since our home is a split-level, there is no room at the front door at all. You open the door and your choice is up, or down. Of course with bags in hands and kids who know they're supposed to take off their shoes but do it on the front step as you're trying to get around and wet boots and dirty carpet on the stairs...it's enough to drive yours truly completely mad. loco. annoyed. insane.
Step one of a less loathesome winter goes to...
And the winner...is a completely new mudroom/laundry room!
That's right folks (apparently this has turned into a gameshow), we will be using our garage now that we've cleaned it out and will be coming through the house that way and NOT the front door. We're also ripping out the carpet on the stairs too at some point.
Our laundry area is most loathesome no matter what season it is. It's unfinished and off the garage and well, the place where let's just say, the cat has come in very handy. Hubs is going to finish it up, put up real walls and cover up the cement and areas where there's just insulated framework. And, ceramic tile over the cement floor. And hopefully when we can afford it, a drop ceiling to cover up the pipes.
But wait...there's more! In the other area where it's a tool bench area and furnace, we're going to close that up and make a new wall and put the mudroom part-also known as basically cubbie spaces and a bench to sit on. All coats, boots, school bags, backpacks, diaper bags...will go here.
We're going to put a new door in the hallway downstairs to make a new entrance to the newly re-arranged tool area/furnace. This is the doorway to the laundry room, the new door to the furnance area will be right behind that open door on the left.
I am so very very very excited. I can't wait. So far, Hubs has cleared out everything.
Lots of before and after pictures coming your way.

ooh! that sounds so awesome! i love love the home renovation process...esp. when the hubs gets on board and things get DONE!! make sure you show some 'during' pix, too!
GREAT idea!!!! There's no getting around the mud and muck of winter! At least the way you're going to set it up you won't have to look at all the boots and crud :) Can't wait to see the before/after pics!
